Protocols help to guide the everyday activity of any organization. All employees, simply by being an employee, agree to be bound and guided by the protocols.

Federal Schools follow the Ontario Provincial Education Act since there isn’t a federal equivalent to follow. Provincial school boards base their policies, procedures, protocols and bylaws on the Education Act as their guide. Federal Schools do so as well.

The process:

Once the need for a protocol to be written and implemented has been determined by management and administration, the writing process can begin. An exhaustive search of current, active policies, procedures, protocols and bylaws from other provincial board jurisdictions is undertaken, and used to guide the writing of protocols that can be implemented at federal schools on Six Nations. Once written, management and administration read, review and make suggestions for changes to be made before the final version is signed off by the members of the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Federal Schools do not have access to a legal department for legal review of each protocol. Therefore, it is imperative that the language of each protocol is drawn from at least two provincial school board jurisdictions.

The Protocol Committee

To ensure that the protocols written and implemented meet the needs of the school communities, a Protocol Committee has been instituted. One staff member from each school has been chosen to assist in the development of each protocol. The Protocol Committee is chaired by the policy development lead. The committee meets once a month for 1/2 day to discuss protocols but regularly has input throughout the month between meetings. All protocols are periodically reviewed and updated as required.
