Our Story
J.C. Hill Elementary school is located in the Village of Ohsweken next to the community fairgrounds. The school is named after Dr. Joseph C. Hill, born June 16, 1915 at Six Nations. Dr. Hill was a teacher and an influential educator in the schools at Six Nations of the Grand River during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s.
The school was named in honour of Dr. Joseph C. Hill in 1965. The first grade 8 class started in a smaller version of the building in 1962. The next year, both grade 7 & 8 students attended there. The school was known as “new” Central School and additions were made to the building over the years to accommodate an education office, as well as, all the Grade 7 & 8 students in the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. During this time, J.C. Hill School afforded the opportunity for all the children in grades 7 & 8 on the territory to meet, socialize and learn together in a central location. Grade 7 & 8 students residing outside the village were given the choice of attending J.C. Hill or remaining at their home school beginning in the late 80s.
