The Education Act defines an exceptional pupil as “a pupil whose behavioural, communicational, intellectual, and physical multiple exceptionalities are such that he or she is considered to need a placement in a special education program…”
Each child brings with them unique and special gifts ranging from singing, dancing, artistic abilities, listening, memorization, and many more that provide educators with many opportunities to enhance and introduce learning in many ways for the continuous growth of our students.
A Special Education Program is defined in the Education Act as an educational program that:
- is based on and modified by the results of continuous assessment and evaluation; and,
- includes a plan, followed in the Individual Education Plan (IEP), which contains specific objectives and an outline of special education services that meet the needs of the exceptional pupil.
Special Education Services are defined in the Education Act as the facilities and resources, including support personnel and equipment, necessary for developing and implementing a special education program.
Special Education Placements include:
- Regular classroom
- Regular classroom with resource assistance/withdrawal
- Self-contained classroom with integration in a regular classroom
- Self-contained classroom
- Specialized setting (i.e. Care and Treatment class; provincial/demonstration school)
- Alternative Home Instruction
