Our Story

Emily C. General Elementary School was opened in August 1991. Emily was present at the opening.

Emily C. General was a teacher in the Six Nations community. She was the secretary for the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council at one time. She travelled with them to England sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, and met with the British Crown. Upon returning to Canada, a delegation of members went to Parliament Hill. They went to discuss Treaties and land rights issues. The issues they discussed are the same matters that were at the forefront of the 2006 Six Nations land reclamation.

Emily was very proud of who we are as Haudenosaunee people and she wanted the children to be taught about our culture, history and Nations as allies.

Emily was the founder of the Six Nations Forest Theatre Pageant, a natural outdoor place where plays were performed, teaching others about Indigenous people.

Emily was a teacher for many years.  There came a time that she was required to swear allegiance to the Crown, to swear on the Bible, as a subject of the Crown. Knowing she was not a subject, but an ally, she refused to comply. Emily was no longer able to teach at Six Nations.  Emily C. General’s later years were spent at the Iroquois Lodge at Six Nations.
